1978 through to 1980 : A perm, a pimps moutstache and a bear chest all packed into a tiny 5ft 2in frame. Plays everything in the studio like a Stevie Wonder who only just learned what sex is.
1981 through to 1992 : Fluffy purple shirts. Purple everything. Typical 80s gelled and sprayed hair in the 80s, early 90s, a more straightforward, clean look. The music follows suit, frilly and very 80s moving to more straightward pop in the early 90s.
1993 through to present : Sales and physical frame seems to get smaller with every passing year. Lacks the mystique of earlier years, thanks to the symbol/slave debacle. Nobody likes him even though he can still sell 2 million records? Something is wrong.
A Common Misconception
Its a common misconception that all of prince’s protegees were either short or female or indeed, short females. Prince has had many associates but it wasn't always necessary for him to sleep with all of them.
How To Buy
For a truly representative selection of Prince music, you need albums rather than hits CDs and you need a good span across the various stages of his career. So, rather than just picking up the ambitious, potentially offputting for life 'Sign Of The Times', 'Purple Rain' better represents the sound of classic 80s Prince for newcommers. You can always get round of 'Sign Of The Times' later, preferably two or three albums later once you have a good grounding of what a Prince album is all about. 'Dirty Mind' i've chosen to highlight the rawer, funk exhilaration of the earlier Prince years. Suddenly it will make sense to you where his reputation comes from. 'Musicology' beats off tough competition as my pick of his latter years, without spawning any major hits it still represents quality work from the man they call Prince.
