I just heard this on the radio. Very sad. However, I'm glad he was able to enjoy the recognition he deserved, tho' he had to wait until WELL after Big Star disbanded to get that recognition.
You know, just yesterday I looked at a back issue of Mojo magazine from about 2005-06, and there was a short article about a Box Tops reunion, which included Chilton. |

I've been listening to Third/Sister Lovers like crazy the past two or three years, originally I was more hooked on their early stuff, but I love how his songs are all great and different. His solo stuff can be really great too, though I only really only have one comp and a live album of that stuff. Maybe a few of his albums will trickle out on re-release soon after this news to make his passing a little easier to bear.
Honestly as far as artist deaths go, I wasn't this sad since I heard Syd Barrett died. Not that I expected either of them to create much of anything new, but just the feeling that the planet's a little lonelier and less interesting without them on it with me.
This past year I sort of convinced myself that "Kangaroo" is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. If you took my music collection it could fit dead center, really--as a beautiful stream-of-consciousness love song grounded tightly in reality, but with a mind-altering musical construction so ahead of its time that it's scary. All in less than 4 minutes.
Few people, if any, will leave behind such an incredible body of work when they pass. God bless him,

i think "thirteen" might possibly be my favourite song of all time.
What a shit month it's been for music lovers, with Mark Linkous passing away too. |
