Fake Sound Of Progress, Start Something,
The Fake Sound Of Progress 7 ( 2001 )
Shinobi Vs Dragon Ninja / The Fake Sound Of Progress / Five Is A Four Letter Word / And She Told Me To Leave / Kobrakai / The Handsome Life Of Swing / A Thousand Apologies / Still Laughing / For Sure / Awkward / Ode To Summer

Who would have thought that the new Faith No More would come from Wales? And be damn good into the bargain? Of course, coming from Wales means that The Lost Prophets may not get such money and promotion and 'hip' factor behind them that Faith No More did. But, that doesn't matter! You like good rock music? Well, turn in this direction, there's something happening. The first two songs are both superlative, and live with anything Faith No More ever did, and the comparison is justified. The singer bears a resemblance to 'the bloke' from Faith No More, the guitars and bass both Rock, the drums do their bit, but the whole album was produced by some guy called Dan Sprigg. And, this is the difference between UK music and US music. US music has money behind it, UK music doesn't - unless you happen to be Radiohead, Gareth Gates or Robbie Williams. I would say the first two songs here are enough to pleasantly impress anybody, but there is more than that. 'Five Is A Four Letter Word' sounds like it's a hip-hop song from the brief introduction, but then turns into a fast, aggressive guitar assault with lots of riffing and fast vocals to match. 'And She Told Me To Leave' is the first song on the album that is even remotely slow, an obligatory rock ballad with added keyboards, sadly it's rather dull. 'Kobrakai' gets things back on track with very heavy almost nu-metal guitars, scratching, the works. 'The Handsome Life Of Swing' is both wonderfully titled, and astonishingly performed. The singer starts to really scream for the first time on the album. Lost Prophets sound American in their approach, they certainly don't sound like Tom Jones, and some music 'connoisseurs' would put them down for this, but not me. No, they aren't original, 'The Handsome Life Of Swing' even includes the lyric 'King For A Day' - it's obvious where these guys are coming from, but having said that, The Lost Prophets should provide plenty of comfort to a mourning Faith No More fan, so they do indeed serve a purpose. Besides, there is actually more than that, here. We've got a debut album, and all sorts of directions they could move in.

'A Thousand Apologies' is where the rots sets in as they start to repeat themselves, 'Still Laughing' is an undistinguished slower song, 'For Sure' has a few interesting lyrical and guitar moments and works ok. 'Awkward' is fast and furious, but this late in the album you need something different to what's appeared earlier in the album. 'Ode To Summer' actually sounds a little fresher, a few different rhythms. Lost Prophets obviously have things to learn, they sound better performers than writers at this stage, but they do create an enjoyable 'racket' across at least two-thirds of this album, so that's ok.

I think this album is better than the second album due to its more aggresive nature.I generally agree with your review but i believe that still laughing and for sure are two of the best tracks on there.

Start Something 8 ( 2004 )
We Still Kill The Old Way / To Hell We Ride / Last Train Home / Make A Move / Burn Burn / I Don't Know / Hello Again / Goodbye Tonight / Start Something / A Million Miles / Last Summer / We Are Godzilla, You Are Japan / Sway

I'd still like them to give us a little more variety across the course of a full album, a few softer moments perhaps, but there is no doubting that Lost Propets have got better. I'd like to see them tour the hell out of America, but they are starting to touch upon something here. Well, the first five songs. Two of them singles, and with a song placed inbetween the two singles sounding just as fine as either of the two singles. One possible thing to get over just doing thirteen rock songs, bordering on Faith No More and bordering on post nu-metal, is to make sure all of the songs are good. Lost Prophets manage that feat better here than they did during the previous record. Oh, before I get into things, they do offer a song like 'Goodbye Tonight' which is a softer, more considered song. It gets by without just offering the admittedly impressive sound and playing skills - it offers fine song-craft as well. That's what we want! Oh, and the America thing. These guys could SLAY AMERICA!! But, they need to put the effort in, they need to get out there. Oh, i'm gonna jump around at random during this review. The title song opens so damn well, crushing guitars, keyboards, atmosphere. They break into something that should and could translate well in huge stadiums. These guys have something. 'Start Something'? They are starting something, in for the long haul. They are getting better, but they aint quite there yet. Next time around, they'll make a sheer classic if they continue this rate of progress. The fake sound of progress?? Ha, ha, not quite!! Oh, don't you love my writing style, by the way?? You name another fucking reviewer that writes like this! I'm no professional, admittedly. I make mistakes in both english and grammer. What the fuck, I don't give a shit.

The singer can scream quite well, every single member of the band is a good musican. 'Make A Move' is the highlight here for me, an astonishing track. No, the album doesn't quite hold your interest throughout, but Lost Prophets are going someplace. I hope they find what they are looking for. Both the singles are stunning and 'We Are Godzilla, You Are Japan' is both a song with an excellent title, and a song to get off too. Yeah!! Rock and fucking roll!!!

I totally agree with your comments on Start Something, the lost prophets album. However, you did not give enough mention to the song Last Summer, which is an excellent tribute to the last moments of happiness with your friends. It captures the rawness of friendship without been too melancholy and the lyrics explain exactly how powerful the feelings of happiness and sadness are at these times. If this song was to be rated, I'd give it 9 1/2 out of 10. The only thing that could've been better about it was its pace, which, if slowed down, could've created an excellent relief from the fast and furiousness of the album. And I think if there was another slower song, maybe an acoustic, the album would've been a definite 9/10.

the new faith no more? NO. Faith no more is easily the most underated hard rock band to come out of the 80's. they were and are still like nothing else. and to compare the two bands to each other like that is just wrong. lost prophets is just another mtv friendly band that will in now way come out with even two more albums. a really weak band live and really good example of tools with guitars.
