2005 ListingsThis wasn't a good year for me personally for discovering old artists previously unknown to me. There was no prog-rock journey, no delving into the back-catalogue of George Harrison, etc, etc. All of which makes this years list something of a rarity, almost every album here was releases in 2005, the one or two that weren't being released during the tail-end of 2004. Still, artists making their debut in the end of year list include Bebel Gilberto, Bloc Party, British Sea Power and LCD Soundsystem. Indeed, the top three positions are all taken by new artists. For Bloc Party topping my 'What's On' list with a debut album? Well, that kind of thing hasn't happened for a long, long time. Comeback of the year goes to The Wedding Present, a big-time favourite artist of mine in the early nineties. 'Take Fountain' ranks as one of their best albums, certainly the finest record they've put out since the mighty 'Seamonsters' in 1991. Elsewhere, 'Broadcast' reach a respectable number six to follow-up 2003's number one 'Haha Sound'. LCD Soundsystem have put some life back into dance-music by mixing it up with the sound of The Fall. The Fall themselves hit number ten this year with 'Fall Heads Roll', proving you can't keep a good act down. Oh, and as an extra feature this year, if you wish to comment on this list, add your own list or whatever, please follow this link and your thoughts will be listed here. And? Well, that's about it for another year. Roll on 2006.The year in full December 2005 He loves, he loves, he loves those numbers. Four kings of EMI are sitting, stately on the floor. Randy Scouse Git? Top tune! Ah, pete. Will you ever make another record? Second of two albums this year and stellar stuff. The strokes search for a career revival in outer space? An excellent follow-up record, all things told. It's not quite Xmas yet, though I feel this will be on my turntable more when it is Xmas! One of the better modern bands around at the moment. It was worth the wait, Stevie. Don't let us wait as long next time, eh? Proof that sticking around long enough will at least mean you become average.... November 2005 Better than possibly could have ever been realistically expected. Let's see how good Carl's album is, shall we? Ha, ha. After everyone keeps voting for him in the end of year poll, I thought I'd see what all the fuss was about! Kasier Chiefs can go suck my dick. Broadcast do endure. A sound like Stereolab produced by Joe Meek. His best album in several decades. Lovely and beautiful stuff. Beach Boys harmonies and Brian's best Xmas record Everybody needs to hear this album. The idiot releases his best album. It creeps in during a poor month. October 2005 After 37 albums or so, The Fall still prove they've got 'it'. Potentially, an even better set than their debut. How rare! A High Llama and a Fatima Masion, both in a previous life. Very ramshackle, sometimes painful, other times a triumph of human spirit. Unlike recent efforts, this set sounds strangely nostalgic. Release a new album that sounds like Felt! Until then, thank you for this. A transitional album from the now slimmed down duo. A reliable, often inspiring set from the veteran rockers. Not as immediate as his last high-point, 'Flaming Pie'. 'My Friend David' is wundebar! September 2005 Another wonderful creation from the twisted pen of Mark E Smith. I'm so very pleased they are back. I love this group. 1st album in four years from the former Felt main-man. Now a Mercury Prize winner! One of the best electronic albums i've heard for a good while. Back to somewhere approaching their best after a few lacklustre records. As good an album as anyone could expect from them in 2005. Only just got this, but it seems fine. A good Paul effort. Why the critics hate them, I really dont know. Less poppy than any other Supergrass album. August 2005 Perfect. Especially when you've been made redundant! I will review this soon. It's astonishingly good. So easy to listen to, very cool. Head-rush in the morning? Yeah! Somebody been eating spinach? What else explains these super-natural feats? They need significant progression next time out, but this is fine til then. Frank goes country soul. Stunning vocals, so dreamy. I suspect this will hang around a little yet. I still really love 'Blue Orchid'. July 2005 Magical, dream-inducing, noisy, romantic and dark. Everything. Three good albums in a row from our Laura. Hooray! The most unsexy, sexy music ever. Ah, I wanna hug her! Imagine Nick Cave playing piano with Jeff Buckley singing. That's what these guys sound like. Go meg, get in there my son! Classy and typically solid fannies effort. It's the album of the summer. Kinda. God, i've got to review this soon. Maybe i'll do it today! After all the hype, I succumbed. And yes, this has a good song on it! June 2005 She's been releasing unique lovely stuff for awhile now. This is her best. Refugees, some nice proper Suede type ballads? Yep! Ah, Planty makes his best solo effort by a country-mile. Good on him! May 2005 It hasn't ended on an oily stage at all! This modern love is the song of choice for everybody apart from Jack Feeny. Fool. They are back and sounding wonderfully dreamy. How do a cartoon band grow elder and progress? Well, learn how! Andy Bell writes a couple of good songs! Refugees is a stupendous comeback! Rough music, a little too rough? Some of the best. Freak Scene is the best. Well. April 2005 Stupendous debut offering. There's a lack of other decent new releases, really. A Lot mellower than their debut. A plethora of delights are buried within! The band that invented grunge, it says here? He's live. He's alive! Classy and glassy and etc... Too much to get into all at once, says I. I may not be atuned. Disco infiltrator? Top tune. March 2005 Actually, a true return to form. I'd underestimated this. Once the hype has died, a listener really appreciates how good this is. A new Tori album, nuff said! If this proves to be the last ever Cohen album, he'll have gone out on a high. Sixties pop gems obscurte, compiled! Good arrangements and production, though not as immediate as prior albums. On Repeat-uh. On Repeat-UH! Can't spot the MES influence at all, can you?!?!!! Ah, i'll review her soon, don't fret! Should be huge. Problem is, Natalie Imbruglia is huge instead. Such is the modern single charts. Heartbrteak! February 2005 An early contender for album of the year, without question. A glorious mix of bossa and genuine soul. A nuggets compilation, creamy vocal harmony pop from the 60s An album packed full of guitar pop delights! Shake it baby, a-ha! A slow-burner, so far. Blimey! Peels other favourite band return after a ten year absence. Not quite as good as the hype, but still good. Another new nuggets compilation focusing on the psychedelics! Brian!
