We're officially in summertime now, although here in blighty, the sunshine is noticeable by its absence. Not much happening release wise either, although I am hugely impressed by the series of albums under the banner 'Original Album Classics', which I think is Columbia Records idea. You get five albums for around £15 - an absolute bargain and a great idea, in my book. This is the kind of innovations the record companies need to be exploring.

On the adriandenning.co.uk playlist this month then we have the newish Clinic album, 'Do It!'. They describe this as their 'summer album'. In reality it's no such thing but it is their best for quite some time.

New Releases In June 2008

  • Viva La Vida Or Death and All His Friends ~ Coldplay
  • Here We Stand ~ Fratellis
  • All I Intended to Be ~ Emmylou Harris
  • Poor Man's Heaven ~ Seth Lakeman
  • Fleet Foxes ~ Fleet Foxes
  • Pacific Ocean Blue ~ Dennis Wilson
  • Dreams of Breathing Underwater ~ Eliza Carthy

Nearly all of the above are worth buying. The Fleet Foxes album is vying for album of the year with their David Crosby meets Brian Wilson meets tibetan monks meets folk - weirdly pure American sounds. Eliza Carthy produces a follow-up to her much maligned 'Angels And Cigarettes' and ignores the traditional folk stuff for an album, at least. Coldplay reach number one in both the UK and the US with perhaps their worst album to-date.

    What Else?

Which classic albums do I like this month? Well, Dennis Wilson has his 'Pacific Ocean Blue' finally remastered and reissued. Dennis was the sexy Beach Boys, the real Beach Boy, the proper wild California beach-bum and also, a fantastic song-writer. This clip is from The Beach Boys magnificent 'Endless Harmony' DVD, a much watched film in our house.

VINTAGE FOLK CLIP OF THE MONTH

You may have noticed last month we had my least favourite album of the month award? I haven't really thought of one for this issue of 'tracklisting', so for fun, I can have a different award each month. With this being a kind of folky thing ( and why can't Fleet Foxes' make a PROPER video? ) and with Sandy Denny being rightly celebrated on the anniversary of her death - why not some vintage Sandy Denny? This clip also showcases the mighty Fairport Convention in their most famous incarnation and is a tribute to our marvellous BBC. No irony there, by the way. Well, let's face it - people complain about the £100 a year plus license fee they have to pay, whether you watch or listen to the bbc or not - but what do you replace it with if you take it away? Imagine this then, ITV1, ITV2, ITV3, ITV4, Channel Four and Channel Five. Plus all the Sky channels, which for my American Readers, is basically FOX. No more BBC radio. No more programs like the clip below? Minority interest my arse - these programmes need to be made. The BBC has been a great force for good and I cherish it. Anyways.....
